What FUE is

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) removes individual follicular units one at a time with a micro-punch under a millimeter across. No scalpel is used and no strip of skin is cut, so there's no linear scar: the donor area heals as tiny dots that become unnoticeable in about two weeks.

Hair for the transplant is taken from the back and sides of the head. This area isn't sensitive to dihydrotestosterone, the hormone behind a receding hairline and a thinning crown. A transplanted follicle keeps that property in its new spot, so it grows for life and won't fall out the way male-pattern hair does.

How the surgery works

   Consultation and markup

   The doctor examines the donor and recipient areas, assesses density and graft supply, determines the stage of hair loss, and draws the future hairline. You see exactly where the hair will go before anything begins.

2. 02

   Prep and anesthesia

   The donor area is trimmed short, cleaned, and numbed. The anesthesia is local: you stay conscious, can talk, and can take breaks.

3. 03

   Graft extraction

   Follicles are removed one at a time, each with a small amount of surrounding tissue, then placed straight into a chilled solution. How long a graft spends outside the body directly affects how well it takes, so this step is never rushed or dragged out.

4. 04

   Channel-making and implantation

   Micro-channels are opened in the recipient area at the same angle and direction your own hair grew in. The precision of this step is what separates a result that looks natural from one that looks operated on.

How long it takes

The surgery takes six to eight hours on average, done in a single day. Duration depends on graft count — two thousand and four thousand grafts are very different amounts of work.

For a large graft count, the doctor may suggest splitting the work into two sessions a few months apart. The donor area gets time to recover, and the final density ends up higher than doing it all at once.

Recovery, week by week

1. Day 1–2 Dressing and check-up. The transplanted area looks like many tiny dots; some forehead swelling is possible.
2. Day 3–7 Swelling goes down. First hair wash, strictly by the doctor's instructions: no rubbing, no strong water pressure.
3. Day 10–14 Scabs clear completely. By this point most patients are back to normal life without anyone asking questions.
4. Week 3–8 Shock loss: the transplanted hairs shed while the follicles stay in the skin and enter a resting phase. This is an expected stage, not a lost result.
5. Month 3–4 Growth begins. The first hairs are thin and light, and over time they match the rest.
6. Month 12 Final result: hair has grown in and thickened, and can be cut and styled as usual.

Who it's for

• Scalp skin conditions and active-phase autoimmune disease.
• Rapidly progressing hair loss at a young age: the pattern is still changing, so it's wiser to let it stabilize first — otherwise a new bald patch forms around the transplanted area within a few years.
