Hair growth after a transplant: when to expect results

“When will I see results?” is the most common question after surgery. The honest answer: not right away. Straight after the transplant you see the planted hairs, then they shed, follicles rest, and only then does real growth begin. Here we cover the general pattern and what studies have measured.

Note: we found no PubMed work that maps growth precisely month by month, so the pattern below is approximate. Your timing depends on your hair and how you heal.

What usually happens: the general pattern

In the first weeks transplanted hairs usually shed along with their shafts, while the follicles stay in the skin and rest for a while. Then a first fine growth appears, which over time becomes denser and thicker. The final result is judged after a year or later.

Shedding is not loss of grafts. In a randomized study of 240 patients, post-surgical shedding occurred in 73.81% when grafts were held in a special solution versus 95% in Ringer’s solution (with 3,000 grafts or more); final survival did not differ between groups (Zhou et al., Dermatologic Surgery, 2023, doi:10.1097/DSS.0000000000003799).

How many grafts survive in the end

In a retrospective study of 248 patients who had hairline restoration with long-hair FUE, mean graft survival at 9 months was 93.1% (Jin et al., Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2024, doi:10.1111/jocd.16136).

In another, a prospective randomized study (60 patients), 12-month survival was 81.0% in the control group and 91.1% in the group whose grafts were additionally treated with a growth-factor preparation (Lei et al., Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2025, doi:10.1111/jocd.70464). It is a single small study, and its conclusion should not be carried over to any clinic.

The spread of figures shows the main point: survival depends on technique, graft handling and the conditions of a particular clinic.

What results look like in our patients

The photo shows a clinic patient before the transplant and 9 months after FUE, 5,200 grafts. Results are individual: they depend on area, density, donor quality and aftercare.

  • Shedding of planted hairs in the first weeks is a normal part of the process, not a reason to panic.
  • Do not compare your calendar with someone else’s: growth pace is individual.
  • Photograph your head in the same light once a month: progress is easier to see than in the mirror.
  • If something worries you after a year, show your surgeon: decisions are made after an in-person exam.

What we do

Send photos of your head and the time since surgery on WhatsApp: the surgeon will check whether your healing and growth are within the usual range.
